It makes a good sense to renovate a room for Miss A as a fist indoor renovation project, we concluded back in 2018, when Mr. J and me were discussing priority of renovation projects at home. The house is huge (to my personal opinion), and the kid’s room could be both on the second floor and the first floor, on one side and the other. On the other hand there was this 👇A part of the house, two small rooms, with total of around 30m² on second floor, was unheated. Well, we could heat the space with electricity. By ‘unheated’ I mean it wasn’t connected to our central heating system. We heated it with electricity. When doing a little math, obviously, heating with electricity = increased CO2 + waste of money. And besides, it seemed, house had such a weird humid odour. At least my nose could smell it. This, of course, is bad news for indoors climate in general. And especially bad news for us living in high-in-precipitation-low-in-sunshine- all-year-around Denmark. This space, we’ve learned, had once been used as a rum for storing different things. Maybe butchers stuff? Who knows. You can still see the red flap, that was used to access the room from outside on the northern facade. You can also see a door that once connected the rest of house with this room through the attic. Previous owners first used the area for storage and drying their laundry up there. And then established two small kids rooms you could enter to through the corridor. So, we really wanted heating in this section of the house, and a kid’s room was the highest priority.Normally it takes us for ages to make decisions, but luckily that time it was easy. I love obvious choices.Although we had no idea, if it was complicated or not to establish heating system, the project, from a general perspective, seemed quite uncomplicated. Windows were there, the entire space had a hardwood floor in good condition, insulation in desired thickness, electric wires were on place. So, I started the project with preparing the room for tearing down the partition of two small rooms. But when I went on unscrewing the furniture and removing from the rooms, the incident with water leakage in next door room happened. The project ‘new room for Miss A’ was set on hold, while we had to wait for the insurance case be cleared up. And it took a couple of months. We went back to the project in Febuary 2019.I started with tearing the old closet down. And behind the MDF I took out, there was a brick wall. Raw, red and unfinished. It was imperfect and probably was meant to be hidden, as the brick work wasn’t done with care. But it was beautiful. I really wanted to show this wall off and decided not to hide it behind drywall panels, when we would start building. When my brother and our friend saw the wall over a video chat, they were as emotional about it as me, while Danes weren’t impressed. Apparently, we, Armenians, are glad for brick walls. Probably, because brick is not something you can see a lot in Armenian buildings.Another discovery was, that the floor of the closet hid two pipes. That was awesome. The existence of pipes in the room ment that establishment of radiator and connecting it to the rest of the heating system wouldn’t be a big hassle.
Then I teared the partition with drywalls down that separated two small rooms and created a kind of corridor. Although I accidentally sawed in electric wires, hit my hand and got a couple of other scratches, that was the easiest part. Tearing the stuff down and driving them to recycling station. Then it was time to build. But since none of us had built before, we were stuck with where to start building and how. I stood there in the room, that suddenly became so specious, and stared around. When starting the project, I hoped that consulting with YouTube and googling for some expert advice would be the way to progress with building. But I had so many questions. How I am going to fill the gaps in between drywall panels, that was formed as I removed the partition and the wood frame for the partition, was my biggest concern.I had my neighbor over to look at it and explain the order of workload.I understand the part with spackling and painting, but can’t imagine process with filling the gaps between drywall panels, I said to our friends, when we visited them.
And our friend Mr. N confidently replied that all the drywall panel work was easy. And he would like to come over and help us. Another friend would like to join. And they did it. They came over and fixed the walls, and taught us how to build. And it was awesome. So fantastic.
Thank you guys for all your help. We couldn’t make it without you ♥️Setting up of drywalls was followed by spackling, painting, and then plumber installed the radiator. And then Mr. N came over to help Mr. J to build up a frame for the pipes and install baseboards. Thanks again! We are so lucky to have you ♥️At least, electric wires were fixed and the wooden floor was sanded down and varnished.Ms. A moved to her room at the end of October 2019.
It was a long process. But thanks to friends and their support we did it! And the best part of this project? Well, I’ve become more confident. I am now more courageous to open up a new building project 💪
